Proserpine Tours
Situated in the Whitsunday region of Queensland, around 26 kilometres (16 mi) from Airlie Beach, Proserpine is considered a base for those wishing to see the Whitsundays; however, this small town is certainly a beautiful paradise in itself. With the Proserpine River at its heart and lush emerald farmland surrounding the CBD, Proserpine is the quintessential Queensland farming community, complete with the friendly country hospitality. In fact, in 2007, Proserpine won the Tourism Queensland Friendliest town award!
Named after Persephone (the Greek goddess of fertility) by explorer, George Dalrymple, the town of Proserpine is blessed with highly fertile soil, and sugar cane – along with cattle grazing – has been the primary industries within the area in the past. These days though, tourism is becoming the area’s stand out economic driver and it’s not difficult to see why – with fantastic year-round weather, gorgeous surroundings, all the modern facilities, easy access to major tourist destinations and exciting architecture, Proserpine has it all. Speaking of architecture, the well-preserved ‘art deco’ shopfronts lend a charming touch to the town’s CBD, boutique stores, hotels and country style accommodations, while the friendly locals emphasise this charm. Dotted with parks ideal for picnicking – such as Mill Street Park, Pioneer Park, Rotary Park and the Cultural Centre – plus a number of attractions to explore, such as the Proserpine Historical Museum and the Peter Faust Dam(which is a popular fishing spot), you’ll always find a way to spend a relaxing afternoon. Scenery includes the 62-metre tall, twin Proserpine Mill Chimneys that command attention over the city skyline, as well as the distant Clarke Range mountains to the west. Dryander National Park to the north and Conway National Park to the east also offer great day trip opportunities for nature lovers.
